Site notes
The current COMPS Shell Point tidal weather station is physically located within the Shell Point Beach Park at 30° 03.498' N (30.058° N) and 84° 17.432' W (84.290° W). Mounted adjacent to the seawall is an instrument tower and platform housing: Wind Speed/Direction, Relative Humidity/Air Temperature, Barometric Pressure, and Precipitation sensors. Marine instrumentation includes Water Level, Temperature, and Salinity. Data is hourly transmitted via the GOES satellite. Site funding is via a cooperative effort between the University of South Florida's/College of Marine Science's COMPS program, the Emergency Management Preparedness and Assistance Trust Fund, and the Wakulla County Division of Emergency Management and Public Works. This site became an operational USF/COMPS coastal station on 6/12/2008.

This station is the second COMPS station serving the Shell Point area. The first station was located nearby at 30° 03.607' N (30.060° N) and 84° 17.43' W (84.290° W), on a 6'x 8'x 7' wood frame building elevated 5 feet above a seawall cap on a steel frame. This station originally operated as an official NOAA/NOS tide station (Station # 872-8229) from 04/27/1973 until it was abandoned on 12/02/1986. Ownership of the vacant tide house was transferred from NOS to USF/COMPS on 06/01/2000. After necessary structural repairs were made, the tide house was re-instrumented. This site became an operational COMPS coastal station on 11/25/2000 and operated continuously until it was removed on 1/11/2007 because of impending property development.
